Navigating the Cistern
Wheelchair Access
The Basilica Cistern is wheelchair accessible. A dedicated entrance on Alemdar Street (near the exit) features a platform lift that bypasses the main 52-step staircase, taking visitors down to the cistern level. Staff are available to operate the lift.
Walkways and Surfaces
Inside, the tour route consists of raised metal walkways that are wide enough for wheelchairs and have railings. The paths are flat and cover the entire visitor area, including the route to the Medusa heads. Please be aware that the environment is damp, and surfaces can be slippery.
Accessible Toilets
An accessible restroom is available at ground level near the entrance and exit area.
