Photography

Photography for personal use is permitted. However, the use of flash, tripods, and other professional equipment is strictly forbidden as it can disturb other visitors and the sensitive environment.

Bags and Luggage

Large bags, backpacks, and suitcases are not allowed inside. There is no cloakroom or luggage storage facility on site, so please make alternative arrangements for your belongings.

Prohibited Items

Food, drinks, and smoking (including e-cigarettes) are not permitted inside the cistern. Please do not touch the columns or throw coins into the water to help preserve the site.

Safety and Conduct

The walkways can be wet and slippery, so please walk carefully. Children under 15 must be accompanied by an adult. Please keep your voice low to maintain the tranquil atmosphere.

Common questions about what is allowed

Why is flash photography not allowed?
Flash photography is prohibited to protect the delicate ambiance of the cistern and to ensure a comfortable experience for all visitors in the dimly lit environment.
Is there a dress code?
There is no formal dress code. However, it is cool and damp inside, so we recommend bringing a light jacket. Comfortable, non-slip shoes are essential as the floor can be wet.
Can I bring a stroller inside?
Strollers can be difficult to manage on the 52-step staircase at the entrance. While not explicitly forbidden, it may be challenging. The site is, however, accessible via a platform lift for wheelchairs, which may accommodate some strollers.
Are pets allowed?
No, pets are not allowed inside the Basilica Cistern. Only certified assistance animals are permitted.
