Information on who is eligible for free or discounted entry to the Basilica Cistern.

The Basilica Cistern offers free admission to certain visitors. Please read the eligibility criteria carefully and ensure you have the required documentation with you on the day of your visit. For information about physical access, please see our accessibility page.

Eligibility for Free Entry

Who Enters Free

    • Visitors with Disabilities: Free admission is granted upon presentation of official proof of disability.
    • One Companion: One companion accompanying a disabled visitor also receives free entry.
    • Children: Children under the age of 7 can enter for free.

Discounts

    • Students: A student discount is available for Turkish students and international students studying in Turkey. A valid student ID must be presented.

Important: The Istanbul Museum Pass is not valid at the Basilica Cistern. All visitors who do not meet the criteria above must purchase a standard ticket.

How to Claim

Free and discounted tickets must be obtained at the ticket counter on-site. You cannot book them online in advance. Please be prepared to present valid identification or documentation to the staff at the entrance to verify your eligibility.

For visitors with disabilities, simply present your official disability ID at the entrance for free admission for yourself and one companion. For children under 7, proof of age may be requested.

Common questions on eligibility

Do international students get a discount?
Only international students who are officially enrolled and studying at a university in Turkey are eligible for the student discount. A valid student ID from a Turkish institution is required.
Can I book a free companion ticket online?
No, free tickets for disabled visitors and their companions must be arranged at the ticket office on the day of the visit upon presenting valid documentation.
Is there a senior discount?
Free entry for seniors is available for Turkish citizens aged 65 and over. This does not apply to foreign visitors.
