The Forest of Columns

Upon descending the 52 stone steps, you enter a vast space supported by 336 marble columns, each 9 meters high. The columns, arranged in 12 rows, were salvaged from various older structures, showcasing a mix of Ionic, Corinthian, and Doric styles. The symmetrical layout and the reflection on the water create a surreal, forest-like atmosphere.

The Medusa Heads

The cistern's most famous features are the two Medusa head column bases located in the northwest corner. One is placed on its side and the other upside down. Their mysterious origins and deliberate placement make them a captivating highlight and a must-see for every visitor.

The Weeping Column

Also known as the Hen's Eye column, this pillar is constantly wet and features engraved patterns resembling tears or peacock feathers. It is believed to pay tribute to the hundreds of slaves who died during the cistern's construction. It stands as a poignant memorial within the ancient structure.
